When Hapbt was about 6 or 7 years old he had a Fisher Price record player, and would take records from his parents into his room and listen to them on his headphones for hours by himself, sometimes while playing with his toys. One day he discovered a series of records by Sandy Nelson, a famous drummer who would do instrumental covers of famous songs, but with a percussion-intensive twist. Instantly, he fell in love with this percussion-heavy style and especially the breakdowns. Other records such as those of Isaac Hayes, Duane Eddie and the Rebels, The Ventures, and Dave Brubeck eventually started to influence the kind of music he would enjoy later in life. His parents purchased him a TI-99/4A personal computer at the age of 8 and his second love was born. When he was about 10 or so, he began listening to the Beastie Boys and Run DMC, LL Cool J and Whodini -- and it was not until middle school, moving from urban Madison to rural Chippewa Falls, that he became influenced by more traditional redneck music such as Pantera, Slayer and Metallica, and other heavy metal bands. Finally in 1994 he began making very modest compositions in Scream Tracker 3, by the famous Future Crew demo group. Having little or no exposure to modern electronic music, his work was largely based on samples from metal and rap songs. It was not until the introduction of Buzz by Jeskola, another famous demo group, that he began to use software synthesis. Not long after, his first works were delivered that he felt happy with, and the idea of creating an original sound started to enter his head. The basic premise of Hapbt's music is to capitalize on his own personal talents, not trying to emulate any existing style so much as to discover what he does best, and do it consistently well. Each track is the result of a series of ideas integrated into an audio sequence and then assembled into a coherent 'song'. The foundations of this sound are percussion and the psychology of sounds, with melody and harmony taking a back seat, reduced to their absolute minimal components, only supporting the driving rhythm section.
